About the Institute

On July 1, 2021, the HSE International Center for the History and Sociology of the Second World War and Its Consequences was reorganized by transforming it into the HSE Institute for Advanced Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies (ISPI). Since its creation in January 2011, The Center for the History and Sociology of the Second World War and Its Consequences has significantly expanded the scope of its research and has gone far beyond the history of the Second World War. This was the main reason for the reorganization. At the moment, the ISPI employees are engaged in research covering the entire period of Soviet history, as well as the first post-Soviet decade.

The main activities of the Institute:

The Institute for Advanced Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies closely cooperates with the School of Historical Sciences of the Faculty of Humanities of the Higher School of Economics and the Faculty of Humanities of the Higher School of Economics as a whole. Employees of the Institute teach courses for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students studying at the programs of the Faculty of Humanities of the Higher School of Economics. The Institute's leading international partner is the Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

The research activities of the Institute`s staff are currently focused on working on the following research projects: "Extraordinary and routine: the evolution of political, social and cultural practices in the context of the "Soviet century" and "The Soviet model of military mobilization: the formation of a policy of priorities"; this year, the interdisciplinary project "The Social Anthropology of Institutions in the late USSR" was launched, in which the Institute's employees take part. Five Research Assistants of the Institute are working on PhD theses on various aspects of Russian history and culture. The Institute's employees are recipients of research grants from the Russian Science Foundation.

In addition to directly implementing research projects and participating in educational activities at the HSE, the Institute of Soviet and Post-Soviet History organizes annual large-scale scientific conferences that thematically cover the problems of the entire twentieth century. The Institute hosts a Forum for Young Researchers of Soviet and Post-Soviet History and Culture, where young researchers and doctoral / postgraduate students from Russian and foreign universities can discuss their research projects with senior colleagues. In addition, the Institute holds regular scientific seminars, round tables and thematic conferences.
